How does Akoua handle garbled medication names?
Garbled drug names are recovered against an Australian drug vocabulary, shown as visible corrections you can revert, and never invented from nothing.
Drug names survive dictation badly, so Akoua recovers them against an Australian PBS/AMH drug vocabulary — the only medication vocabulary it has today, so a UK or NZ clinician is working against Australian drug names — and does it in the open. Every correction is shown, every correction is revertible, and the recovery is structurally unable to introduce a drug that wasn’t spoken.
What a recovery looks like
Recoveries appear as visible corrections against what was heard:
- “a torva statin” becomes
atorvastatin 40 mg, marked as recovered, with a revert control. - “candy sartan” becomes
candesartan 16 mg, the same way. - “Lipitor” becomes
atorvastatin— brand names normalise to generics, as you’d write them.
Nothing is hidden behind the tidy version. You can see what was heard, see what it was resolved to, and put it back if the resolution is wrong.
Why it can’t invent a drug
The reconciliation is deterministic and paired with a capture guard, so a recovery can only ever be applied to something that was actually spoken. It is not a model filling a plausible gap. A drug-free consult stays drug-free.
That matters more than accuracy on the names it does recover: a wrong drug you can see and revert is a correction, and a drug that was never mentioned is a fabrication.
What still needs your eye
Left and right, doses and critical values get an extra advisory check before you sign — surfaced for your eye, never auto-corrected. Akoua makes no clinical inferences: it does not judge whether a medication or dose is appropriate, only whether it matches what was said. The medication list in a confirmed note is yours, and nothing is finalised until you confirm it.
